Grant Peeples at Jovita’s in South Austin.
Message from Grant…
Song is always in my head, impetuous and immutable. And I write every single day. Sometimes people say to me things like, “Man, why don’t you write something a little Happier, maybe?” But Im compelled to write down what scrolls across my cerebral screen. That’s the only honest way I know to do it. I’ve tried chasing stuff down, inventing songs, making-up songs, and when I do, when I finally think I’ve got it, it rings all wore-out to me—the same damn song other people have been writing over and over and over. And that don’t do nothing for me. I’d just as soon work at WalMart.

Grant Peeples was a complete surprise! Went to see Betty Soo and Gurf, and they were great as usual, but Peeples was funny, moving and refreshing! His songs ranged from cheeky lol funny, “Sunshine State” to tearful laments, “The Hanging” (duet w/Betty Soo), with a command of lyric like Jon D. Graham, James McMurtrey and Alejandro Escovedo. Another shock was that he’s not from Austin or even Texas, but that he’s from Florida. We told him someone must have muffed his birth certificate because he’s as Austin a songwriter as he can be. Hope he comes back soon!
