Tin Can Phone is an up and coming rock/reggae group in Austin’s ever-expanding music scene. TCP’s live shows bring a house party feel, while spreading a positive message on an array of topics ranging from politics, to destiny, to run-ins with the law.

Matt, Josh, and Bert are childhood friends from the small beach town of South Haven, Michigan and have spent the last 15 years playing in bands all over the country. Soon after their arrival in Austin in 2007, they formed Tin Can Phone with Matt’s cousin Tyler. Since their formation, TCP’s sound has evolved to incorporate atmospheric guitars, organic rhythms, and synthetic beats while still holding true to their roots. The band draws influence from artists such as RX Bandits, K-OS, and Pepper.

Tin Can Phone continues to play extensively throughout Texas, having shared the stage with Passafire, Outlaw Nation, and Eleven Fingered Charlie. The band is grateful for the support they have received, and embrace every chance to make new friends and fans.

Brink of Disaster, otherwise known as “Brink” around the Austin music scene, began as a 3-piece instruMETAL act in 2006. Original members Ian Abete, Joey Vera and Tony “Frog” Deaver, first crossed paths in Austin, Texas searching for a mix of musical style, personality and vision that all bands seek in their members but seldom find. Working together they began the writing process and playing shows in Austin’s notorious Red River District with the hopes that someone would hear their music and want to put a story behind it. While playing a show in late 2007 the band was approached by Aaron “Worm” Ugalde, who not only liked the music but believed that he would fit in with his personality and vision. After a few weeks of rehearsing together in their good friend’s living room, Brink began to vibe together musically and in January of 2008 Worm became an official member of Brink of Disaster. Since 2008 Brink of Disaster has been fortunate enough to be able to bring the sonic destruction and energy in their live show to cities around Texas and New Orleans. Their approach to metal is the fusion of the musical style and influences of each band member. In the past four years Brink of Disaster has been anything but silent in this DIY music world and continues to gain momentum with every note played at every show. With a fan base that grows by word of mouth, Brink of Disaster shows that it can and will continue to create the grassroots following that is ever so important to them. As 2010 rolls along, Brink of Disaster will continue to play live shows and work diligently to become a force to be reckoned with night in and night out.

Their classics Lets Get Drunk, The Boots Stay On and Mayonnaise showcase not only their musical sensibilities, but also the couth upon which the natural honesty of The Beaumonts shines. With their music full of the stuff you don’t talk about in front of your Grandma, The Beaumonts are best absorbed live in concert and their show calendars have been marked by bills with other honky tonk hero’s such as Ray Wylie Hubbard and Scott Biram. And, to add to their celebrity credit, Unknown Hinson thinks that their music is “gooder than hell”.

Arclight Records also thinks that their music is gooder than hell and released the bands first studio album, Get Ready for The Beaumonts, nationwide in 2010 through Nail Distribution. The band knows how to get their job done and has no illusions about where they fit in amongst the present commercial music landscape. Frontman Troy Wayne Delco explains, “as long as the songs are simple, and we don’t have to practice too much, and it’s just fun and easy to do The Beaumonts shall champion on”.

Conscientious of the demand by their fans for quality country music, the band gigs consistently throughout the year where they make an effort to tour through San Antonio on just about every venture away from Lubbock they make. You can also find this good-hearted band giving something back each year by holding an annual Honky Tonk Christmas Food Drive in San Marcos – continually trying to top the previous years overall proceeds.

All in all, there is not another band out there quite like The Beaumonts, and everyone seems just fine with that.

Black Eyed Vermillion

BLACK EYED VERMILLION was born Gary Christian Vermillion in 1969 as the product of a one night stand between an unemployed circus freak and a jackal. Abandoned by his mother, he was adopted by a roaming tribe of Buddhist Monk street sweepers, eventually causing him to find inner-peace within the gutter.
At age 7, young Vermillion fell into an open sewer. After being trapped for three days he was finally rescued; unconscious and badly hurt. When he awoke he could only communicate in swear words for a year and his voice was severely damaged from the septic fumes. He also sustained a head injury, resulting in his first set of black eyes which would lead to the nick name he still bears to this day.
At 11 Vermillion set out to see the world but mostly saw it from behind bars. As he stumbled around the world from bus stations to bars to shelters to jails, he was always just lucky enough to cross paths with some of the most talented people in the underground music scene. Stevie Tombstone, One Armed Willie, Handsome Andy Gibson, Cornelious ‘the Pain’ Wickenburg, Joe Buck Yourself, Heathen Bill, Stix the Clown, Whiskey Dick and of course the legendary Shelton Williams the 1st were just a few of the people that would help him realize that he had absolutely NO musical talent! But they also taught him that it didn’t matter as long as there was a song in his heart.
These days Black Eyed Vermillion is being backed by The Vermillionaires; a solid line-up consisting of Fritz ‘Burger’ Nation and Johnny ‘Sunshine’ Johnson on Guitars, Kurtis D. ‘Millionaire’ Machler on Bass and Bircho Birch on Drums. Combining the elements of American roots music with the dark anger of punk and grindcore, they will be attempting to play as many gigs as possible, depending on everyone’s ever demanding Rehab schedule.

Soft Talk Radio is comprised of 4 talented musicians: Perry Saunders, Gabe Shulman, Thomas Coronado and Nicholas Hanson.

Perry, Gabe and Thomas have been friends since high school, where they began to develop their sound. Nicholas Hanson joined the band in October of 2009 to begin collaborating on a new sound that barrows various aspects of Pop and Rock music. There’s talk of adding other elements to the band, such as a keyboardist, but for now the band is currently playing shows without one. High Impact
Primarily composed of women between the ages of 21 and 40+, the Lonestar Rollergirls embody a “do-it-yourself” attitude, pooling their resources and varied skill sets to keep their league up and rolling. With 10+ committees and an elected governing body, these women have fought to build their organization from the ground up, never taking an official loan and keeping the majority of league responsibilities in-house. The same work ethic continues to pervade the league today, as the rollergirls look to the future and plot the course for where the next five years will take them. Their plans are big and their dreams even bigger, and there is no doubt that these women will continue to impact Austin, and beyond, in a serious way.

Teams
We currently have five teams: The Hellcats (50′s-style vixens who love their hotrods and switchblades), The Putas Del Fuego (Cholas with a taste for blood and tequila), The Holy Rollers (the baddest bullies in the Sacred Heart schoolyard), The Rhinestone Cowgirls (Texas fillies that offer up the best in country-fried violence), and the Cherry Bombs (ruthless Rock ‘n’ Roll misfits run amuck).

The History
The Lonestar Rollergirls’ first public bout was seen by approximately 400 spectators. By season’s end, crowd attendance had reached 1,300, with hundreds having to be turned away at the door. Now, as the 80-member skater-owned and operated league hits its fifth anniversary, the sport of roller derby has grown in incredible leaps and bounds, as has the amount of involvement that each skater puts into this business.

In 2003, TXRD purchased an original roller derby banked track, making them the first all-girl league to ever skate on a banked track. TXRD has sparked a roller derby revival and can be directly connected to new leagues springing up in cities around the world, from the Cayman Islands, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.

The Word is Out
Local and national media have taken notice of the women of TXRD, recognizing that this group of women truly is unique. Media Coverage includes: The Chicago Tribune, The Austin American Statesman, The Austin Chronicle, Austin Monthly, Austin Fit Magazine, Bust Magazine, Drill Magazine, Loaded, Playboy, Rank and Review, SPIN, Texas Highways Magazine, IN Magazine, Austin Music Network (AMN), National Public Radio (NPR), KLBJ Radio, 101X Radio, Mega 93.3 Radio, KAOS 95.9 Radio, KVRX Radio, KOOP Radio, Comedy Central’s Insomniac with Dave Attell.

TXRD is also featured in three music videos, as well as a documentary being filmed by Bob Ray and Werner Campbell of Crashcam Films. The documentary, titled “Hell On Wheels,” tells the story of a group of women who create a high-octane rock and roll-fueled, all-girl roller derby league from the ground up. The film follows the women through the planning stages, fundraising rock shows, grueling practices and, ultimately, up to their first bone-breaking, smashingly successful first season and beyond.

In 2006, the Lonestar Rollergirls were featured in a 13-episode television series on A&E titled “Rollergirls.” This opportunity helped spread the new derby to households across the nation and the world, and renewed the excitement for banked track roller derby that many viewers recalled from decades ago. That same year, the Lonestar Rollergirls had the chance to skate in larger venues across Austin, including the Austin Convention Center in Downtown Austin.

The LonestarRollergirls also have participated in the first two interstate banked tracked derby bouts for the new all-girl leagues. In 2005, the league hosted the Renegade Rollergirls from Arizona, and then in 2006, the LA Derby Dolls from California. We look forward to many more cross-country matchups in the near future!

The Best Fans in the World
The fans that attend our bouts range from white-collar professionals and soccer moms with kids in tow, to bikers and mohawked rockers. The largest majority of or fan base is from 21-35 years of age, with an emphasis on things alternative when it comes to music and entertainment. Much of our audience is comprised of those who spend a large amount of time in Austin’s entertainment districts. But again, because of roller derby’s past glory, it appeals to many who grew up watching it on TV.

TXRD Loves Its Community
The women of TXRD volunteer their time and make special appearances at many benefits and events to raise money for local charities. Recent events have benefited New Horizons, an Austin-area shelter for mentally and physically abused children, The Austin Human Society and The David Powell Health Clinic for uninsured and underinsured HIV+/AIDS patients.

Derby Slang

Thunderdome: Where people go for roller derby mayhem and madness.

Getting railed: when a skater rams another skater up onto the outer track rail

Give a whip: An assist move in which a skater extends her arm and whips her jammer around the track, propelling her with momentum and quite possibly taking out unsuspecting blockers in her path.

T-stop: dragging the back skate perpendicular to the front skate.

Track Rash or Masonite Burn: Stinging, red streak across buttocks and/or legs resulting from too-short-skirts/pants/shorts and exposed skin hitting the banked track. Accompanied by painful skin-sticking-to-masonite board sound.

Fishnet Burn: Similar to masonite burn, but an attractive, semi-permanent fish-scale pattern, resulting from falling while wearing fishnet stockings.

Over the top: Overhand cheat move in arm wrestling.

Take that bitch down: A call to jump the jammer and stop her any way possible.

Take downs: The semi-legal version of “take that bitch down.”

Over the rail: Pushing a skater over the barrier rail onto the floor.

Seymour: Lux’s pet hematoma.

2 lap duel: Two skaters, two laps, anything goes…

Spank Alley: Where you go when you’ve been bad.

Pack em up!: Fight yell by Ref Masterblader before jam.

Clothesline: Straight arm block against a jammer’s throat.

Headlock: Good “take that bitch down” move, and legal if hand is open.

Red Rover: Effective block by two skaters with linked arms.

Cannonball: Deliberate fall to trip several skaters on the opposing team at once.

Solid: A great compliment about a skater’s stability and toughness.
“She’s solid.”

Cutting the track: Crossing the infield to rejoin the pack after you fall.

Clawing: A jammer pulling her way through a tough pack.

Riding the lip: One skate on, one skate off the track – now illegal.

Catching the lip: Can rip your skate off, or break your ankle in half.

Striding the Track: The best way to skate around the banked track to build up the most speed (three strides on the straightaways, two on the corners).

Pushing to the inside: When a desperate blocker pushes opponents onto the concrete infield.

Snake Drill: A practice drill in which all skaters skate single-file around the track, while a single jammer weaves through the entire line from back to front.

Stich ‘N Bitch: Team meeting where members get together to drink beer, work on uniforms, strategize, and basically … well, bitch.

She-E-Os: Founders of Texas-style roller derby: Anya Jack, April Herman, Heather Burdick and Nancy Lynn.

Purple Heart Award: Awarded to the most heinous injury of the year, usually taken home by recipient of a broken bone.

Blood and Thunder: Practice drill in which all skaters take the track and proceed to knock the hell out of each other until only one skater remains standing.

The Nutcracker Suite

Each year, the Austin-based rock band THE INVINCIBLE CZARS perform their wacky rock version of the music from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, and each year it gets better! This new Texas holiday tradition began in December 2004 when the band introduced its version of the Suite to Austin at two shows: a children’s matinee and a later, louder show aimed at the bands existing rock fan base. Since then, the group has continued the tradition yearly, entertaining people of all ages with their unlikely holiday hit. In 2007, the band self-released a studio recording of the Suite which became the seventh highest selling holiday CD at Waterloo Records that year. Their creative and whimsical version of the Nutcracker Suite has opened the door for many exciting performance collaborations with such organizations as Boys & Girls Clubs of Austin, Austin Children’s Museum, Ballet Austin, the Houston Ballet, Wicked Cricket Dance Theatre and Graham Reynold’s Golden Arm Trio.

Joining the likes of Don Henley (The Eagles), Phil Collins (Genesis) and Fred LeBlanc (Cowboy Mouth), Dallas native Tim Smith handles lead vocals and drums with amazing nonchalance, locking in with Troy Gallaher’s energetic and “in-the-groove” bass playing and the beautifully expressive electric and acoustic guitar stylings of Brek Lancaster. Drums, bass, and guitar – all the ingredients of a quintessential rock-and-roll band.

Add to this dynamic rock-and-roll band, the 2005 Grand Master Fiddler Champion, Roberta Rast, and competition piper Matt Willis on the haunting Great Highland bagpipes, and you have all the right ingredients for a truly amazing Celtic Rock / World music / AAA / Rock-and-Roll extravaganza!

In 2002, six-time National Fiddle Champion Roberta Rast joined the band. With the title of Grand Master Champion, her fiddling journey has taken her from small-town Idaho to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, and now on stage with The Killdares.

Since first appearing on the music scene over 10 years ago, The Killdares have gone from local pub performers to national touring headliners, sharing stages with an incredibly diverse range of national and international artists.

In 1998, the band released their self-produced debut CD, “Broken With A Word”. Their 2001 follow-up, “A Place To Stand”, showed exceptional growth and maturity in their song writing, and contained a higher energy that caught the attention of producer Chris Bell, who has worked with Erykah Badu, and also with other prominent acts such as U2, Kirk Franklin, Fuel and most recently the Polyphonic Spree. “A Place To Stand” would be submitted in 2001 for Grammy ® nominations in 5 categories.

The Killdares released their third CD in the middle of the following year. Simply entitled “LIVE,” this album is a snapshot of their broad live set list, and in 2002 was also submitted for Grammy ® nominations. Over the course of five albums to date, the band has delivered top-notch original numbers, and introduced fans to a roster of influences that includes Big Country, Fairport Convention, and punk pioneers The Ramones. From their signature instrumental jams, to their radio-friendly pop-rock songs, The Killdares continue to solidify their reputation as a great live band.

With the release of their 2005 full-length recording, “Any Given Element,” The Killdares continued to expand their tour schedule all over the U.S. playing hundreds of shows a year, and building thousands of new fans throughout the nation.

Finally, in 2008 The Killdares reached new heights with their 5th independently released and produced album, “Secrets of the Day”. Perkins is a certified blues piano playing legend. He can safely be grouped with B.B. King, the late Willie Dixon and John Lee Hooker as one of the true pioneers of the Delta-to-Chicago blues form. Perkins was born into a plantation family on July 7, 1913 in Belzoni, Miss., and began to teach himself guitar while still in grade school. The venue will be housing creative workshops, screen movies, teach yoga, give local musicians a spot for open jams, sunday brunching and a lot of other really cool struff in the works. The gallery is still currently being worked hard on to finish out, but they will be celebrating it with a Documentary screening of an insight on the lives of artists Allysa Flores, Rob McCowan, Ciara Blossom, Sarah Shellard, as well as FIFTH GALLERY artists Marc Zuazua, Lucas Negrete, and John Weber. The screening of the documentary which is from 3-6 at the Alamo Drafthouse South (1120 S. Lamar) The creenining will be followed by an art show at High Ball (which is in the same shopping center as the drafthouse) from 7pm-2am.
